All people need personal identity and control, dignity, purposeful life and a sense of belonging for their mental wellbeing, but this becomes a challenge as people age, where challenges such as declining physical health, loss of independence and social isolation can have an even greater impact on their emotional wellbeing. By 2026, India will have over 180 million people over the age of 60 and about one in five of these is likely to have mental health problems such as anxiety, depression or cognitive decline.
In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Achal Bhagat, Senior Consultant Psychiatrist and Psychiatrist at Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals and Chairman of SARTHAK, shared, “The mental healthcare system in India is not prepared for the growing number of people who will need help. Hence, the mental health of the elderly also impacts their loved ones, especially their children who often act as caregivers. However, by making certain lifestyle changes, senior citizens and their loved ones can promote mental health and improve their overall quality of life.”
He suggested-
- Stay connected: Loneliness and social isolation can significantly impact mental health, especially for older adults. Encouraging seniors to participate in community activities, join support groups, or visit with family and friends can help foster a sense of belonging and purpose.
- Participate in meaningful activities: Pursuing hobbies, learning new skills or volunteering can provide a sense of accomplishment and cognitive stimulation. This can help seniors identify activities they enjoy, such as gardening, reading, crafts, or attending educational courses or workshops.
- Keep up the physical activity: Regular exercise has many benefits to mental health, including reducing stress, improving mood, and enhancing cognitive function. Do low-impact activities such as walking, swimming, or light yoga as recommended by a healthcare professional.
- Maintain a balanced diet: A nutritious diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins can have a positive effect on mental health. Muscle mass also tends to decrease with age. Both a healthy diet and exercise can help people stay active. Encourage older adults and their caregivers to plan and prepare healthy meals together, making eating a social and enjoyable experience.
- Practice meditation and relaxation: Techniques such as deep breathing exercises, meditation, or gentle stretching can help reduce stress and anxiety.
- Seek professional help: If a person is experiencing persistent sadness, anxiety, forgetfulness or other mental health issues, it is important to seek professional help from a qualified mental health professional. Timely intervention and proper treatment can make a significant difference in managing mental health conditions.
Sama Baig, Chief Product Officer, Emoha, said, “In today’s fast-paced world, many families juggle multiple responsibilities. Children eager to pursue their careers often find themselves playing the dual role of work and caring for aging parents. This situation can be mentally taxing, with health concerns for both generations. While supporting career aspirations is important, prioritizing the mental health of both children and their parents is essential for long-term happiness and success. By providing a support system that meets the needs of both working adults and their aging parents, elderly care services can reduce stress and create a more balanced and fulfilling journey for the entire family. This allows adult children to focus on their careers with peace of mind, knowing that their parents are receiving quality care and are able to get on with life.”
He highlighted the challenges and assistance for senior citizens –
- Isolation and loneliness: Social connections are vital for mental health. Seniors may experience loneliness due to retirement, mobility limitations or the death of loved ones. Caregivers provide companionship, engage in conversation and facilitate social interactions, which can reduce feelings of loneliness and improve mood.
- Dementia and cognitive decline: Dementia can be a source of anxiety for the elderly. Trained caregivers understand the stages of dementia and can provide support through structured routines and engaging activities that promote cognitive stimulation. This not only helps maintain cognitive function but also promotes a sense of accomplishment and purpose.
- Maintaining activity level: Staying active is important for both physical and mental health. Elderly care can help with everyday tasks, allowing seniors to make time for hobbies, exercise classes, or outings. This gives them a sense of independence and control over their lives, which improves mental health.
Providing assistance to adult children
Sama Beg said, “Caring for elderly parents can be a stressful experience for adult children. Balancing work, family commitments and the needs of the elderly can lead to feelings of guilt, anxiety and even resentment.” She suggested ways in which professional elder care assistance can provide a support system that benefits both generations –
- peace of mind: Caring for aging parents is a complex science and difficult to accomplish without expert help. Knowing that their loved ones are receiving professional care by experts allows adult children to focus on their lives and careers without constant worry.
- stress reduction: Support services for the elderly are personalized, ensuring that the elderly get the help they need. This reduces the burden on adult children, allowing them to spend quality time with their parents with less stress and anxiety.
- open communication: Elder care providers maintain clear communication with families, provide regular updates, and involve them in care decisions. This builds trust and a sense of partnership, making the caregiving experience more positive.
Building a Strong Foundation for Mental Health
By taking a holistic approach, elderly care providers support the mental health of both seniors and their families. Sama Baig reveals some key aspects of elderly care services that promote positive mental health –
- Personal Care Plans: Create customized care plans that meet individual needs, and promote a sense of control and purpose in seniors.
- Meaningful Activities: Encourage older adults to participate in enjoyable and stimulating activities that will boost cognitive function and social interactions.
- Socialization and Relationships: Providing opportunities for social interaction, which can reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation.
- Care Coordination: Help coordinate care and services – from emergency assistance to doctor appointments, lab tests, diagnostics and more.
Investing in senior care is investing in the mental health of both generations. By providing professional support, companionship and a stimulating environment, elderly care enables seniors to lead a fulfilling life, while also reducing stress and anxiety for their families.
