Rapid digitizing in the world, abuse of senior citizens is no longer limited to physical places. It has quietly expanded to cyberspace, where digital literacy deficiency often turns the elderly into easy goals. This developed danger landscape demands immediate attention, dedicated action and most importantly, to inform awareness.
Senior citizens are rapidly exposed to online fraud, identity theft, fishing scam, cyberbulling and misinformation. Often unfamiliar with the intricacies of the Internet, they can inadvertently click on malicious links, respond to fraudulent emails, or share sensitive information on unsafe platforms. Social media manipulation, fake investment schemes and online romantic scams are now common, in which elders are among the weakest people. The desire for separation and connection makes them especially susceptible to such attacks.
Targeting senior citizens one of the most worrying and currently widespread hazards is a digital arrest scam. Cyber criminal laws pose as enforcement officers or government representatives and make false accusations if they are victims of serious legal violations. These scammers’ modus operandies involve deliberately targeting older people, looking at them as more weak and easy to manipulate them through fear and confusion. This requires immediate action as digital literacy, strong support systems and comprehensive awareness.
Given that senior citizens are more unsafe in today’s digital scenario, they should be considered as a collective responsibility to protect them from online dangers. Families, communities and society should move forward overall. In particular, technology-loving youth have an important role. By spending time with your grandparents or divers, they can only explain the basics of cyber hygiene and patience. This involves helping them recognize fraud messages, avoiding suspicious links, using safe passwords, and helping to understand the importance of privacy settings.
These efforts can be supported through comprehensive community engagement. Through interactive sessions, resources in regional languages, and step-by-step guidance, the elderly can be offered for safe online practices. Civil society organizations, local clubs and volunteer groups can organize digital literacy sessions especially for the elderly. Such an initiative should be focused on creating a safe teaching environment where elderly questions can ask questions independently and gain confidence in using technology. Posters in community centers, short videos in regional languages, and street plays or workshops can all be used to give important messages about cyber security that are accessible and reliable to senior citizens. Whatever is more powerful is the capacity for peer-to-peer effects. Once furnished, these individuals often become advocates of digital safety for their friends and family, increasing the wave effect of cyber awareness.
To stay safe online, keep the equipment and software updated with the latest security patch. Use strong, unique passwords and avoid sharing them. Be cautious with unknown contacts, suspicious messages and unfamiliar links or attachments. Enable two-factor authentication (2fa) on important accounts. Include cyber awareness programs to be informed about emerging hazards. To reduce the risk, communicate openly with family or colleagues about online experiences. Report your bank immediately unauthorized bank transactions, and always inform the appropriate officers or platforms for quick action.
In addition to these standard safety measures, other platforms provide support and assistance in cybercrime. These include Cybercrime Helpline-1930, a toll-free, 24×7 helpline to report financial cyber fraud and seek real-time assistance; The National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal that enables complaints related to various cyber crimes online; The National Helpline (14567) provides information, guidance, emotional support and field-level intervention for the Elder Line-General Citizens.
Under the Rules of Information Technology (Mediator Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code), 2021, important social media middlemen (SSMIS)- Platforms with more than 5 million registered users in India are subject to increase in proper diligence obligations. This makes the appointment of a complaint officer mandatory in all SSMI.
If a user is dissatisfied with SSMI’s assigned complaint officer (GO) response or lack of response, they can appeal to the complaint appellate committee (GAC) within 30 days of obtaining GO’s decision or 30 days of non-reaction. GAC provides a completely online dispute solution process, where users (digital nagriks) can digitally file, track and track on their appeal.
Major misuse is an invisible crisis in the digital age. We must work collectively to bring it into the spotlight and face it with education and sympathy. By involving senior citizens in digital empowerment efforts and giving them a voice, we not only protect their dignity, but also enrich the broader digital ecosystem.
