‘Land Snorkeling’ was coined during a hike by American artists Clide Espwig and Carol Guzman. According to Carol, slowly reminded them of snorkeling underwater calmness.
“The first time I tried land snorkeling, I was in Chikmagalur,” Nishant Sharma, the head of marketing in Justwewell, said, “I realized that I was always missing a lot by running through the hike.”

Traveler Deepeshu Soni says that land snorkeling is actually necessary to search for a place.
“In Ladakh and Speesy, the land sometimes looks like the surface of the moon. I have seen the mountains with purple colors. Lahaul has areas of broccoli. In Tirtuk, people grow a type of grain. You can’t see sebachern barris from a car window – you have to pass through the bushes,” he shares.
“These are the types of details that you find only when you travel slowly. For me, travel matters more than destination,” he notes.
Where to try land snorkeling
Nishant says that the diverse area of India makes the ideal for land snorkeling. “You don’t need to go deep into the forest. Even a small forest trail or mountainous route can surprise you if you are looking closely,” they say.

- Flower Valley, Uttarakhand
This Himalayan Valley (painted below) is known for its wild alpine bloom, rare herbs and moist mastic rocks. A slow running here shows that you will otherwise miss on a regular trek.
2. Chikmagalur, Karnataka
Many coffee plantations of this hill city are surrounded by dense forests. During the monsoon and early winter, the forest flooring with fungi, insects, and wild creepers that reward the patient’s eyes.
