Actor Suvinder Vicky, best known for playing Sub-Inspector Balbir Singh in Kohra, became an overnight sensation after the crime drama series released last year. However, the actor says his journey to recognition has been a slow and steady climb. “Sometimes actors like me who play smaller roles get recognised very quickly and sometimes even lead actors don’t get the fame they expect,” says Vicky, who was recently seen playing a villain in Manoj Bajpayee-starrer Bhaiya Ji.
Vicky has been acting since 2001 and says his career started to take off only after 2014. He adds, “I took my time in acting but initially, I didn’t get very successful roles. Somewhere inside me, I knew I deserved something bigger and better, but I wasn’t getting the opportunity.”
Before the success of Kohra, Vicky had also garnered praise for the web show, Cat, apart from appearing in an episode of Paatal Lok (2020), albeit with limited screen time. Although Vicky gained significant recognition through his roles in OTT shows, he insists on giving credit to the entirety of his career.

The 51-year-old actor told us, “I don’t want to give full credit to streaming platforms because I have worked in Punjabi cinema before. If anything, OTT has helped me establish myself in Bollywood. I got to learn a lot while shooting for OTT, so I can give partial credit but not full credit.”
When asked if he was apprehensive about the audience’s response to his negative role in Bhaiya Ji, the actor said he loves playing different kinds of characters. “I have played negative roles in the Punjabi industry before, so I didn’t feel the audience’s support is waning. Every human being has a negative quality, and I use it to enhance my character. I consider myself lucky to play characters as per my directors’ imagination,” the actor said.
Given that Bhaiyaji is Bajpayee’s 100th release, this film should celebrate his legacy. And Vicky couldn’t be more grateful that he got the chance to act alongside him. Expressing his admiration for Bajpayee and humbly acknowledging his star power, Vicky says, “Manoj ji has been in the industry for a very long time, so I knew from the beginning that he would get more attention than anyone else, and he deserves that attention. He has spent 20-25 years here. I am really happy to have got the opportunity to work with such an icon. I am new to commercial cinema; maybe someday I will achieve that milestone myself.”
