Kerala Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar on Tuesday directed vice-chancellors of universities in the state to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the national song ‘Vande Mataram’ in a befitting manner.
According to a release from Lok Bhavan, the Governor told the vice-chancellors that competitions, cultural programs and other activities may be organized to mark the occasion.
Saying that the directive was issued following instructions from the Centre, he said the ideals of the freedom movement should be instilled in all sections of the society.
The release said these instructions were given during a meeting of Vice-Chancellors convened by the Governor in his capacity as Chancellor of the universities.
Arlekar also directed all vice-chancellors to strictly enforce hostel rules and maintain discipline on their campuses.
It was also decided to constitute a committee under Kerala University Vice Chancellor Dr Mohanan Kunnumel to give concrete suggestions to prevent violence in universities and educational campuses.
The Lok Bhavan release said the Governor’s directions follow the recommendations made by the committee that probed the violence that led to Siddharthan’s death at the Veterinary University campus in Wayanad last year.
In October, the Union Cabinet decided to celebrate 150 years of the national song ‘Vande Mataram’ across India.
According to ‘India.gov’ portal, ‘Vande Mataram’ was composed by Bankimchandra Chatterjee. It has a status equal to the national anthem ‘Jana Gana Mana’.
