On Tuesday, Amit shared a reel on his Instagram profile, where he explained how much damage a tight ponytail can do to the hair. “If you are regularly braiding your hair too tightly then you are at risk of hair breakage and hair fall. I will tell you why, because the pressure exerted on the roots when hair is pulled can damage your hair follicles, resulting in hair fall,” he said in the video. “Are you tying your hair too tightly? You’re doing more damage than you think,” the hair stylist captioned her video.
Tight ponytails can cause traction alopecia:
Hair fall isn’t the only damage that can occur from a tight ponytail. It can also lead to a more serious condition called traction alopecia. In traction alopecia the hair is regularly pulled tightly back into ponytails or braids or cornrows. Early symptoms of traction alopecia include the appearance of a receding hairline, especially around the forehead, temples, or back of the head. In more severe cases, traction alopecia can cause ulcers and patches of scarred skin on the scalp. However, this does not mean that we do not make ponytails or braids at all. “Instead of you going ahead and tying your ponytail, just make sure that the hairline is a little loose and you use products like hairspray and cream to make it look sleek and tight,” says Amit Thakur.
It’s important to leave your hair loose, the hair stylist said. “It’s okay to have a tight hairstyle sometimes but just like your skin, you should let your hair breathe,” says Amit Thakur.
