In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Priyanka Singh, Senior Consultant, Radiation Oncology, Paras Health, Gurugram, explained how cold cap therapy works.
“Cold cap therapy has become a valuable tool for patients undergoing chemotherapy who want to preserve their hair,” he said. This method works by cooling the scalp, which helps constrict the blood vessels, reducing the amount of chemotherapy drugs reaching the hair follicles. As a result, the treatment is less likely to affect the hair follicles, thereby reducing hair loss. By slowing the metabolic activity of the follicles, cold caps provide a protective layer for the hair, making it a viable option for many patients wishing to maintain their appearance during chemotherapy.
How Cold Cap Therapy Can Be Beneficial in Cancer Treatment
“Although the process may bring some discomfort due to the cold temperatures, the benefits far outweigh the initial challenges. Many patients find that the therapy not only helps preserve their hair but also gives them a sense of normalcy and confidence during an otherwise difficult time. It provides them with a small but meaningful way to control their treatment experience, ultimately improving their overall quality of life as they move forward in their cancer journey,” said Dr Priyanka Singh.
