However, when fasting for extended periods of time, dehydration is a health concern. It is important to eat a healthy diet before and after the fast to stay fit throughout the day. In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Anshul Singh, team leader, Department of Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics, Artemis Hospitals, said, “Karwa Chauth includes the pre-fast meal, Sargi, which provides all the nutrition for stamina from dawn till dawn. complex carbohydrates

Start your sargi with foods that are high in complex carbohydrates. It could be oats, quinoa or brown rice as these ingredients release slow and steady energy to the body which keeps you satiated for a longer period of time.

It is important to include protein foods to reduce muscle breakdown and maintain strength. Some good choices would be cottage cheese, yogurt, a handful of soaked nuts and seeds, almonds, walnuts and chia seeds.

Don’t forget the importance of hydration. Drinking plenty of water or eating hydrating foods such as cucumber, oranges and watermelon during fasting will prevent a person from becoming dehydrated. Even drinking coconut water or buttermilk an hour before fasting can help restore a little electrolytes and prevent the possibility of dehydration.

Include fiber-rich fruits, such as apples, bananas or pears, in your pre-fast meal. Fruits will give you a good dose of vitamins and minerals while keeping your digestion smooth.

Too much salt can cause dehydration, so keep it to a minimum.
