Dr. Pawan Kumar Goyal, Senior Director, Internal Medicine, Fortis Hospital, Shalimar Bagh reiterated the importance of prioritizing health during Karva Chauth.
He said that Karva Chauth symbolizes the lifelong bond between husband and wife. Dr. Goyal said, “A wife should remember that her life and health are equally important to that bond. Therefore, while observing Karva Chauth fast for her husband, she should follow some safety guidelines for his health. Should be followed.”
He listed some guidelines for those observing Karwa Chauth fast to ensure that the festival is celebrated with enthusiasm and zeal, without any health issues affecting the celebrations. By following some rules you can make your Karva Chauth memorable.

Stay hydrated before fasting
The fast of Karva Chauth also involves abstinence from water. Dr. Goyal highlighted the importance of hydrating a day before the fast. He elaborated, “It is important to drink plenty of water and fluids the night before and in the morning (before sunrise). Hydration helps prevent dehydration, headaches and fatigue during fasting. Coconut water, lemon water and fresh fruit juices can also be consumed in the morning for additional hydration and nutrients.
Eat a balanced meal (Sargi) before morning
Before starting the fast, Dr Goyal told that the morning meal, called Sargi, should be nutritious and healthy. He recommends sargi include a mix of protein (like yogurt or cheese), complex carbohydrates (like whole grains or oats), and healthy fats (like nuts and seeds). These foods provide long-lasting energy and help you feel ‘full’ for a longer period of time. Dr. Goyal cautioned against fried or sugary foods, as they can reduce energy levels at the end of the day.
Avoid overeating after breaking the fast
To avoid hunger throughout the day, many people often eat more than necessary. Dr. Goyal advises to avoid it as it has negative effects on health. He advised having something light like fruit or drinking a glass of water immediately after breaking the fast in the evening. He explained, “After fasting for an entire day, the digestive system can be sensitive, so it’s best to avoid heavy, oily food right away. Gradually include easily digestible foods like soups, salads and homemade meals. Do it. Indigestion and discomfort can be avoided by eating wisely.

listen to your body
Dr. Goyal reminds us that everyone has their own physical limitations, and it’s important to pay attention to them. “Fasting is a personal choice, but it is important to recognize your body’s limitations,” he said. If you feel dizzy, extremely tired, or unwell during your fast, consider breaking it early. Pregnant women, women with medical conditions such as diabetes, or women taking medications should consult their doctor before fasting, as prolonged fasting may not be safe for everyone.
