A state-level committee, tasked to create a new Education The policy for Karnataka has submitted its report to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. The recommendations of the committee indicate a significant change away from the national curriculum structure, emphasizing regional languages, constitutional values, and more local courses.
One of the most prominent proposals is the implementation of the two-language formula for all school boards. Under this new structure, students up to class 5 will be taught in conjunction with Kannada or their mother tongue and English. In addition, the committee has strongly advocated being a medium of instructions at the middle school level for Kannada.
The report also said for a major change in the scope of the Right to Education (RTE) Act, suggesting that its implementation be extended to students up to 18 years of age. The move aims to ensure that a wide range of children, including those in the higher secondary grade, have access to free and compulsory education.
In a step to reduce dependence on national bodies, the committee recommended that the state ends its dependence on NCERT textbooks. Instead, it proposes the development of a local course that is more relevant to the cultural and historical context of the state. To maintain and implement these changes, a particular board has been proposed to regulate private educational institutions, to ensure that they are align with the new state policy.
The report also highlighted the importance of promoting civil responsibility and cultural pride. It recommends constitutional values a compulsory subject in the course.
Additionally, a state-level committee is to be formed to promote and preserve the Indian knowledge system, which integrates traditional knowledge and knowledge in modern education.
