Bengaluru, Karnataka Higher Education Minister MC Sudhakar on Monday announced the formation of a committee of experienced technical experts from the film industry to modernize the country’s first “Cinematography and Sound Recording and Engineering Polytechnic College” at Hesaraghatta.

A statement from Sudhakar’s office said the minister visited the government film and television institute, which has its origins in 1943, when Sir M Visvesvaraya started cinematography and sound recording and engineering courses at the Sri Jayachamarajendra Government Polytechnic in Bengaluru.
According to the statement, the course was shifted to Hesarghatta in 1996 as the Government Film and Television Institute spread over 25 acres with the assistance of the World Bank.
Sri Jayachamarajendra Polytechnic, a government institute under the technical education department of Karnataka, offers three-year technical diploma courses in 16 programs and, according to its website, has enrolled more than 2,300 students this academic year.
Noting the decline in student enrollment in recent years, Sudhakar reviewed the facilities of the institute and noted shortcomings in the technical infrastructure.
He directed officials to submit a report listing the deficiencies and for immediate procurement of modern equipment, the statement said.
Currently, the institute offers only two diploma courses – Sound Engineering and Cinematography.
The minister proposed to introduce additional skill-based programs in acting, costume design, sound recording, cinematography, make-up, artificial intelligence and gaming to make the institute more career-oriented.
Sudhakar also interacted with students and faculty members, heard their grievances and directed the officials to improve transport facilities and upgrade hostel facilities with modern equipment.
Highlighting the heritage of the institute, he laid emphasis on preserving old cameras and sound recording equipment by setting up a dedicated museum, directing officials to clean, catalog and document all such items.
Later, the Minister visited Kanteerava Studios to inspect the shooting floor along with Chairman of Kanteerava Studios Mehboob Pasha and senior officials of the Higher Education Department.
