Kuppai movie review
Cast: Shreyas Talpade, Tusshar Kapoor
Director: Music Shivan
Star Rating: ★★
As I got out of the theater after seeing KapakPEI, I had two ideas: One, the film leaves you with more questions. And two, Bollywood really needs to break with horror comedy – the situation is reaching a saturation point.
Directed by the heavenly music Shivan, the story revolves around a group of friends – Shreyas Talpade, Dinkar Sharma, Dharendra Kumar Tiwari, and Sonia Rathi – who start playing a dangerous game inadvertently to unknowingly summon the spirit of Anamika. The word spreads rapidly, and soon has a long queue of people eager to get answers from the soul – by revelations about the real identity of someone’s father to solve petty domestic secrets such as stolen jewelery.
But things soon get out of control. How the group handles chaos that makes the rest of the plot.
2023 Malayalam film Romancham’s remake begins as cupcapi, harmless fun. We have seen enough big comedy to know the trops-a token intoxicated, a scared-cat-and they are all present here. The problem is that Kapkapi feels that it is actually fun than that. Written by Kumar Priyadarshi and Saurabh Anand, the story is rapidly affected. A tenant who gets trapped by one of the people is thrown away. Then a gangster comes, played by Dibedu Bhattacharya. After the intermission, Tusshar Kapoor joined the gang, and from that point, it is difficult to track where the film is also. We get “Chadar Mod” and “Lane’s Bods” in the name of jokes. Eventually, you stop laughing – and even stop feeling fear. You just sit like a zombie – expression.

Shreyas Talpade is the anchor of this sinking ship. He is the only one that actually understands the demand for comic timing style, but with limited materials, only that he can do. Tushar Kapoor’s character is confusing – you will never be sure why he is in the film too. Each actor tries, which is both confident and slightly sad. Assurance because at least effort. Sadly because, despite this, you are bored.
The jump is least intimidating, and you all get it.
The music of Ajay Jayanti is a miss.
Finally, Kapkapi is a classic case of wasted capacity-a film that wants to become a bizarre horror-comedy, but is neither scary nor funny. This tired trops, underdeveloped subplots and a scattered screenplay bends too much.
