Several farmers organisations, including the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (non-political) and the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha, on Sunday took out a march in Mohali in support of the CISF woman constable who allegedly slapped actor and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut.
Farmer leaders demanded that the case should be investigated impartially and said that no injustice should be done to woman constable Kulwinder Kaur.
Adequate security personnel were deployed in view of the march that started from Gurdwara Amb Sahib in Mohali.
Talking to reporters, farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher said that the matter should be investigated impartially.
Pandher said that it should be found out what was the reason behind the incident. He said that no injustice should be done to the woman constable.
Farmer leaders also targeted Ranaut for allegedly making inflammatory statements against the people of Punjab.
Kaur was apparently upset with Ranaut’s stance on the farmers’ protest. CISF, which provides security at airports, has also ordered a Court of Inquiry into the incident.
The Mohali police have registered a case against Kaur under sections 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt) and 341 (punishment for wrongful restraint) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Both are bailable offences.
Ranaut said in a video message on Thursday that the constable hit her in the face and misbehaved with her during a security check at the Chandigarh airport. The ugly altercation took place two days after she was elected to the Lok Sabha from Mandi in Himachal Pradesh.
In a video statement titled “Shocking escalation of terror and violence in Punjab”, posted on Instagram upon reaching Delhi after the incident on Thursday, Ranaut said she was safe and fine.
Ranaut said that the constable came towards her from the side.
“She hit me on the face and started abusing me. I asked her why she did that and she said she supports the farmers’ movement.”
Ranaut had said, “I am safe but my worry is that terrorism and extremism are increasing in Punjab… how do we deal with this?”
Another video circulating on social media showed the agitated constable speaking to people, possibly after the incident.
“Kangana had (earlier) given a statement that farmers are protesting in Delhi because they have been given money 100 or “My mother was also one of the protesters at that time,” he said in the alleged video.
