Jyothika recently held a press meet in Chennai to promote her upcoming Hindi film Srikanth directed by Tushar Hiranandani and starring Rajkummar Rao, Alaya F and Sharad Kelkar. The actress got into a bit of trouble when a reporter asked her why she didn’t vote in the recent elections, netizens trolled her for her answer. ‘It’s a personal thing’
A journalist asked Jyotika, given that she supports message-based films, why she doesn’t set an example in real life too and vote. The actor quickly added, “I vote every year.” When it was explained to her that voting does not happen every year, she agreed and added, “Sometimes we may be out, we may be sick, it is a personal thing. Sometimes we vote in person, we can also vote online, not everything is publicized. There is a personal side to life and we should respect it and give it space.”
Netizens react
Netizens were confused about how Jyotika could vote online when everyone goes to the voting booth to cast their vote. Sharing a clip of him from the press conference, an X user wrote, “The question was why didn’t you vote and why didn’t you set an example for others… What happened next was a blast.” Responding to the post, another wrote, “Hi @ECISVEEP @TNelectionsCEO. How can you give @Jyothika_offl the special privilege to “vote privately online” and why don’t we have that option? Please explain…”
An ex-user sarcastically wrote, “Mam, it seems you are the brand ambassador of a new policy decision taken by the government – online voting! Can you please shed more light? This will help poor people like me who are not able to travel internationally on taxpayers’ money like Udayanidhi!” Another said, “Please help me! How can I vote online privately like Jyothika?”
An X user pointed out that voting in local elections is not like voting for Bigg Boss, writing, “You are a special breed to be educated, and remain ridiculously stupid. #Jyotika – You cannot press a button on a keyboard to vote while sitting at home in private. This is not Bigg Boss. It’s okay to abstain from voting, but what ridiculous excuses!” Another wrote, “Social reformer Jyotika, even an uneducated one knows that elections are not held every year but once in 5 years. I never knew about in-person and online voting in Indian elections.
