However, recent research suggests that driving electric vehicles does not have as positive an impact on the environment as these celebrities believe.
Research by scientists at Finland’s University of Turku has revealed that on average, electric vehicle (EV) owners have a higher carbon footprint than petrol or diesel car owners. According to research, even though electric cars reduce emissions, the lavish lifestyle of their owners has a more negative impact on the environment.

Research has found that an electric car owner produces on average half a tonne more CO2 annually compared to a petrol car owner. At the same time, owners of sporty models spread about 2 tonnes more pollution. Researchers studied the lifestyle, car ownership and environmental habits of nearly 4,000 Finns, and found that EV owners generate 8.66 tons of greenhouse gases annually. Whereas the emissions of those driving petrol or diesel cars is 8.05 tonnes.
Difference even among EV owners
However, differences were also seen among EV owners. People who pay attention to the reliability and economy of their vehicles emit an average of 7.59 tonnes of CO2. At the same time, people who are more concerned about the performance of their car, they spread 10.25 tonnes of pollution annually.

The study found that driving an electric vehicle can reduce emissions by 19%, but the emissions savings are offset by the lifestyle of EV owners. The researchers also said that EV owners are generally higher income, tend to have larger homes and tend to travel and consume more, increasing their overall carbon footprint.
