Fans’ love for anime titles such as Jujutsu Kaisen, Demon Slayer, Solo Leveling, One Piece, Dragon Ball, Dandadan and Chainsaw Man has inevitably helped expand the market for their source manga texts.
On one end of the entertainment spectrum, webtoon-based K-drama adaptations are helping to solidify the market for original content, while garnering a growing number of views. On the other hand, the co-existing relationship of anime and manga is doing wonders for both media equally.
Fans’ favorite anime boosts manga sales
As 2024 approaches, Circana (formerly NPD) BookScan, a trusted tracker of physical book sales in the US, has revealed data for December 2024, announcing the top 20 best-selling adult graphic novels. ICv2 revealed details of the high-ranking sales this week, with the 24th volume of Jujutsu Kaisen declared last month’s bestseller. However, this was not the only JJK volume by Gege Akutami to be included in the list.

BookScan’s top adult graphic novel rankings were primarily occupied by Japanese works. The only two American titles to steal a blink-and-you-miss spot on the monthly bestseller list were Kevin Eastman’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin HC (#8) and JRR Tolkien’s The Hobbit: A Graphic Novel (#19).
18 of the top 20 ranks were occupied by anime source texts, including solo leveling.
Claiming the glory of Japanese manga, Kentaro Miura’s Berserk, Yukinobu Tatsu’s Dandadan and multiple volumes of Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece made their way to the top. Meanwhile, the double feature of Chugong’s solo leveling webcomic retained the names of the Korean creations.
Sales of dandan manga have seen a particularly huge increase in November following the October premiere of the Studio Sci-Fi SARU adaptation on Netflix, Crunchyroll and other services. Demon Slayer strikes gold as the first volume of Koyoharu Gotouge’s best-selling series slips to #7 despite its years-old 2018 original publication year. 16 of the top 20 ranks reflected audiences’ undeniable love for the manga. Two others taken up by solo leveling were also ultimately anime-focused chapters.
