Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) elections are underway as voting began at 9 am today and will continue till 5.30 pm, barring a break from 1 pm to 2.30 pm. The tough competition between the RSS-backed Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and the Left Unity saw campaigns on the themes of “demonstration and nationalism” and “inclusion, outreach and student welfare” respectively.
JNUSU Election President Candidates
ABVP has fielded Vikas Patel, while the Left Unity, comprising All India Students Association (AISA), Students Federation of India (SFI) and Democratic Students Federation (DSF), has nominated Aditi Mishra for the post of president.
Angad Singh, Raj Ratan Rajoria, Shinde Vijayalakshmi Vyankata Rao, Shirshwa Indu and Vikas are other contenders for this post.
Vice President candidates in JNUSU elections 2025
ABVP has fielded Tanya Kumari for the post of vice president, while Left Unity has fielded Kizhkoot Gopika Babu. The second candidate contesting for this post is Sheikh Shahnawaz Alam.
Candidates for the post of JNUSU General Secretary
Left Unity has made Sunil Yadav its candidate for the post of General Secretary, while ABVP has fielded Rajeshwar Kant Dubey. Other candidates in the fray include Gopi Krishnan U, Preeti, Shuaib Khan.
Candidates for the post of Joint Secretary in JNUSU Election 2025
Danish Ali represents Left Unity, and Anuj is ABVP’s candidate for the joint secretary post. Kuldeep Ojha, Manmohan Mitruka and Ravi Raj are also facing each other for this post.
According to the election committee, around 9,043 students are eligible to vote this year. According to , about 30 per cent of the nominations for the central panel and 25 per cent of the nominations for school counselor posts come from women candidates. PTI,
JNUSU elections: War of words between Left Unity and ABVP candidates
Left candidate Aditi Mishra, a PhD scholar from the School of International Studies, said the elections were taking place “at a time when dissent and equality are at risk” and pledged to defend “an inclusive JNU that is accessible to all”. On the other hand, ABVP’s Vikas Patel alleged that the Left have been “ruling and ruining JNU for five decades,” asserting that students now want “accountability and solution-oriented politics.”
Danish Ali, who is running for the post of joint secretary from Left Unity, claimed that “Dalits and Muslims are facing continuous attacks across the country” and accused the ABVP of starting similar “divisive politics” on campus. “We must stand up against racism and Islamophobia and protect democratic spaces in universities,” he said at a student rally.
Meanwhile, ABVP said it has “consolidated its position” in JNU, while terming the Left alliance as “disorganized”.
When will the results of JNUSU Election 2025 be declared?
Counting of votes will start at 9 pm. The results will come on 6 November.
In last year’s elections, AISA’s Nitish Kumar was elected president, while ABVP’s Vaibhav Meena won the joint secretary post, breaking a ten-year drought for the right-wing group and representing a “landmark change” in JNU campus politics.
