The notice issued by JNU states that detailed guidelines for conducting student union elections will soon be issued by the office of the Dean of Students.
Jawaharlal Nehru University on Tuesday issued a notification announcing that the JNU Students’ Union elections, pending for the last four years, will be held within eight weeks from the date of commencement of the academic session for PhD students on February 2. The incident comes just hours after the JNU students’ union threatened to launch an agitation against the university administration. The notification said that the elections for PhD students will be held between six to eight weeks after the start of the academic session. “This is to inform all concerned that the JNU Students Union Elections 2023-24 for PhD students will be held between 6 to 8 weeks of the commencement of the academic session i.e. on February 2, 2024,” the notification said. It added that a detailed guidelines for conducting student union elections will be issued by the Office of the Dean of Students in due course.
Earlier in the day, the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) had called for a ‘university strike’ on January 30, demanding early notification of the student union elections. The student union submitted a fresh memorandum to Vice Chancellor Shantisree D Pandit to hold JNUSU elections and revoke the CPO manual and disciplinary action against students.
“Despite repeatedly informing your office regarding cancellation of JNUSU elections and CPO manual and proctorial enquiry, there has been no written communication or response on the same,” the letter submitted to the VC said. The student organization had written a letter to the Vice Chancellor on January 15 and to the Dean of Students on January 17. The student organization said that if notification regarding elections is not issued by February then it will start a complete non-cooperation movement with the administration. 2. “Despite verbal assurance that notification of JNUSU elections will be announced along with the new academic calendar, the JNU administration has not issued a single circular regarding holding of elections, the students’ organization said in a statement on their demands. Threats to protest have not been received.” Elections have not been held in JNU for the last four years. The last JNUSU elections were held in 2019.
