The nomination process for the first phase of assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir began with the release of the official notification on August 20. Voting is being held in the first phase on September 18 for 24 seats in six districts of the erstwhile state.
The last date for filing nominations for this phase is August 27, with scrutiny of nomination papers taking place the next day. According to the schedule prepared by the Election Commission of India, the last date for withdrawal of nominations is August 13 and polling will take place on September 18.
Assembly elections are going to be held in Jammu and Kashmir for the first time in a decade after six years of central rule.
Voting will be held in three phases, the first phase will be held on September 18. The next two phases will be held on September 25 and October 1. The results will be declared on October 4.
The final voter list for the upcoming assembly elections in the Union Territory is also likely to be released today, with the number of voters expected to be close to 90 lakh.
This list is important because after delimitation the boundaries of many assembly constituencies have changed and the number of assembly seats in Jammu and Kashmir has increased from 83 to 90.
There are 87.09 lakh voters in Jammu and Kashmir, of which 44.46 lakh are men, 42.62 lakh are women, 3.71 lakh are first-time voters and 20.7 lakh are young voters.
Out of the 90 Assembly constituencies in the Union Territory, 74 are general, 7 are reserved for Scheduled Caste candidates and 9 are reserved for Scheduled Tribe candidates.
