The Supreme Court on Thursday agreed to consider a plea against reducing the number of attempts given for the Joint Entrance Examination from three to two.JEE-Advanced aspirant
When the petition came up before a bench of Justices BR Gavai and Augustine George Masih, the counsel for the petitioner said, “The matter pertains to the IIT (Indian Institute of Technology) entrance examination in which the number of attempts has been reduced from three to three . Two.”
The lawyer said a similar petition was listed before the bench on January 10 after which the court directed the tagging of the two.
The new plea, filed through advocate Sanjit Kumar Trivedi, said it relates to the process of admission to the prestigious IITs, but the Joint Admission Board (JAB), entrusted with conducting the JEE-Advanced exam, has made changes in the eligibility criteria for students. “JAB, through its press release dated November 5, 2024, earlier fixed the permissible number of attempts for JEE-Advanced at three, but suddenly changed it through another press release dated November 18, 2024, and thus The number of attempts reduced to two,” the petition said.
“The sudden change in the eligibility criteria has affected the petitioner as well as thousands of similarly situated persons, depriving them of the valuable opportunity of admission to the IITs,” it said.
The petition said the change in eligibility criteria is against the principles of natural justice and added, “The impugned notification is also violative of the principles of legitimate expectation and undertaking.”
Seeking revocation of the press release dated November 18, 2024, it said this change has deprived and disqualified many students from taking the JEE-Advanced 2025 exam.
