From pre-conception health to postpartum care, here’s everything we need to know about mother and baby’s health during IVF.
IVF or in-vitro fertilisation is the process in which eggs are removed from the body and mixed with sperm in the laboratory so that the eggs can be fertilised. Then, one or two of the fertilised eggs are implanted directly into the uterus to cause pregnancy. During the entire process of IVF, the health of the mother and the baby after delivery are the primary concerns. In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Samhitha, Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at Prashant Hospital, Chennai, shared how we should be careful to ensure that the mother and baby remain healthy.
Preconception Health:
Health before pregnancy is very important as lifestyle and physical habits cause a lot of problems. Obesity and PCOS are directly linked, and many obese and diabetic men are at risk of azoospermia (absence of sperm). It also has a direct impact on the semen parameters of men and the ovarian reserve of women.
genetic screening:
Genetic testing is not routinely recommended for all couples undergoing IVF – it is only done in cases of a history of recurrent miscarriages or a history of a previously abnormal child.

emotional support:
When a couple undergoes IVF, emotional support is the most important need, especially for the mother, as it is a long, difficult process that involves lots of appointments, scans, and procedures under anesthesia. Sometimes, seeing failures after an embryo transfer cycle can be very emotionally upsetting.
Prenatal Care:
Prenatal care is essential for every pregnancy. For IVF, conception requires a lot of support in the form of progesterone, other hormones and a healthy lifestyle. Prenatal yoga and physiotherapy are recommended as mobility is of utmost importance.
Follow-up care after delivery:
Problems like diabetes, high blood pressure, thyroid and heart diseases can be seen in the elderly, which require follow-up care after pregnancy and delivery.
