Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) Chairman S Somnath has informed that India will continue to send lunar missions until ‘no Indian lands on the Moon’. The scientist said the agency will continue its series of Chandrayaan missions and investigations until an astronaut from the country lands on the Moon.
Somnath was in Ahmedabad as the chief guest at an event organized by the Astronautical Society of India.
In August 2023, ISRO’s Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft made a soft landing on the south pole of the lunar surface, making India the first country to achieve this feat.
“Chandrayaan 3 has performed very well. The data has been collected and scientific publication has just begun. Now, we want to continue the Chandrayaan series until an Indian lands on the Moon. Before that we have to master many techniques, like going there and coming back. “We are trying to do that in the next mission,” Somnath said.

Somnath said ISRO will conduct an unmanned Gaganyaan mission, a test vehicle flight mission and an airdrop test in 2024.
“The airdrop test will take place on April 24. After that, there will be two more unmanned missions next year and then the manned mission, if all goes well, by the end of next year,” the ISRO chairman said.
The Gaganyaan project envisages the demonstration of human spaceflight capability by launching a crew of 3 members into a 400 km orbit for a 3-day mission and landing in Indian waters and returning them safely to Earth.

Somnath said ISRO’s newly developed carbon-carbon (CC) nozzle will improve payload capacity due to its lighter weight and will be installed in the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle or PSLV.
In a release on April 16, ISRO announced that it has achieved a breakthrough in rocket engine technology with the development of lightweight CC nozzles for rocket engines, leading to increased payload capacity.
The innovation, accomplished by the space agency’s Vikram Sarabhai Space Center, promises to increase critical parameters of the rocket engine, including thrust level, specific impulse and thrust-to-weight ratio, thereby boosting the payload capacity of launch vehicles. Yes, it said.
