Factors that cause snoring:

Dr Sheetal Goyal explains, “Many factors can cause this blockage, including nasal congestion, enlarged tonsils or adenoids, obesity, sleeping position and natural relaxation of the throat muscles with increasing age. When we sleep, the muscles in our throat relax, causing the airway to narrow and snoring. Additionally, lifestyle habits such as alcohol consumption and smoking can further relax the throat muscles and increase nasal congestion, making the condition worse.

Ways to reduce snoring:

maintaining a healthy weight: Maintaining a healthy weight is important, as excess weight around the neck causes blockage of the airways. Even a small weight loss can make a significant difference.

healthy sleep position:Adjusting sleep position is also important; Sleeping on your side instead of your back can prevent the tongue from falling backward and blocking the airway.

stay hydrated: It’s also important to stay well hydrated, as dehydration can lead to thick mucus, which increases snoring.

Allergy Management: Controlling allergies is another effective strategy, as they are a major cause of nasal congestion. Using an air purifier to limit exposure to allergens and taking an antihistamine may help improve airflow.

reduce alcohol consumption: It is important to reduce alcohol and sedatives before bed because these substances relax the throat muscles, making a person more susceptible to snoring.

healthy lifestyle: Incorporating exercise and maintaining a healthy lifestyle can further enhance overall sleep quality.
