Asparagus is not the most common vegetable among the gardeners of the house, and it is likely because it is a practice in patience. If you have never seen the asparagus plant, you can be surprised by its appearance. Instead of specific leaves and stems of most other plants, bare asparagus spears simply exit the ground like sticks.
If you want to grow them in your garden, then some things are to know.
For the beginning, 3-8 in horticultural areas, asparagus is not one of the vegetables that you need to plant every year, so plant it where it can grow for a long time. This means selecting a sunny space with well dried, fertile soil. To achieve that fertility, include a generous help of manure or well rotten fertilizer in the soil before planting.
Although it is possible to grow asparagus from seeds, I recommend planting year old crowns, which are passive roots instead. You will find them at the Garden Center and Catalog. Planting crown starts a head by reducing time to your first crop by one year.
In the initial spring, weed-free, plant crowns in finished beds, 12–18 inches wide, 6–12 inches deep and 3 feet dug up different trenches (if more than one row planting). Plants separate 12–18 inches, to spread the roots on the bottom of the trench, then lightly cover with 2-3 inch soil, and well water.
As the shooting increases, add more soil slowly until the crown is completely buried and fills the gap. Then apply wet.

Use a sharp knife to cut each stalk below the soil line, but take care not to damage the emerging stalk. You can continue the crop for about six weeks, depending on your climate. In my suburban New York Garden, I can harvest asparagus until the beginning of July.
It is important that there is no crop after a period of six weeks which begins when the first stalk matures. The remaining stalks should be left to store energy for next year’s crop.

A note about colleagues: Onion and garlic will stunts asparagus, so avoid applying them nearby.
