Is obesity a disease? , Mint

Over the years, obesity has been a push to identify as a disease in itself, and therefore there is something that needs to be treated, rather as a risk factor for other things, such as diabetes, heart disease, stroke and some cancer. And there is really many evidence that suffering from obesity can cause extraordinary poor health. But those who suffer from obesity are not moderately unwell. This argues that per cess should not be considered as a disease.

Till two years ago, such a discussion was a little practical relevance because there were some remedies for obesity between the extremes of biatric surgery and to do less eating outlook approaches and more exercise. However, the arrival of GLP-1 weigh-weighed drugs as semaglutide (commercially known as vegovi) changed in 2023. If these drugs have to be determined wisely and fairly, then who is ill in fat and which does not become an important question.

Incidentally (they began before applying GLP-1 drugs for slimming), a group of 56 doctors responded to that question. The Lancet is called the commission, and this group organized by the journal of that name has developed a better way to diagnose obesity – one that differences when pathological becomes.

The general current remedy for obesity is body mass index (BMI). It is being easily calculated (by dividing the weight of a person in kilograms by square of their height in meters). Obesity is then defined as BMI of more than 30. But some people with high BMI show no signs of being unwell. And, in absence, stockey and well -silent athletes are known as obesity according to this classification. Nor does BMI take care of the physical distribution of fat. Nevertheless it is well established that the fats of the intestine (stored around the internal organs, “apple -shaped” body), subcutaneous fat (stored directly under the skin, is far more unstable than “for pear size). The recommendations of the Commission are more untouchable than the commission.

In order to diagnose their new defined disease, what they call “clinical obesity”, commissioners require two things. First, in addition to the third measures of the body shape (waist perimeter, waist-to-cool ratio or waist-to-height ratio) used to calculate BMI, although to measure the body’s fat directly, sophisticated modern scanning equipment is even better. Second, if this modified measurement in fact, declares a person to become obese, then some objective signal and the ability to conduct the symptoms of low organ function, or the ability to conduct daily activities – such as bathing, eating and dressing – also require to declare that obesity is clinically relevant.

18 diagnostics include breathing, obesity-inspired heart failure, pain in the knee or hip, and obesity of relaxation in many other organs, such as the liver, heart, kidney, and urine and reproductive systems. Without these symptoms, those people are not allowed to be scott-free. They are assigned to an organ called “pre -pricly obesity”, although not sick, they increase the risk of development of clinical obesity and thus it happens. But they are not candidates for immediate drug treatment.

Francesco Rubino, a professor in metabolism and bariatric surgery at Rubino, King’s College, London, who is one of the commissioners, describes obesity as a real illness, is quite radical change. Next task – One that other people have already started, says – it is to do the work that 1BN either people on the planet, who were classified as thick according to the old definition, is clinically qualified as obesity under the new, and thus requires treatment. Early functions, they say, 20–40% of them suggests.

The Commission’s approach seems to be popular already with the Medical Officer. It has already supported it, including the world’s leading health organizations, including the American Heart Association, Chinese Diabetes Society and All Indian Association for Advanceing Research in Obesity. How soon it will turn into medical methods and public perceptions is another case who is and not dangerously obese.
