What is about General Z campaign? Was this only about the ban on social media sites? Did it begin with frustration on alleged brother -in -law, or was it an outbreak of youth against corruption and misunderstanding? Mint Tells:

What was the immediate trigger for General Z protest?

The Government of Nepal on Thursday announced the decision on 26 unregistered social media sites along with the Minister of Communications and Information Technology.

On August 28, the Ministry called all domestic and international social media platforms to register within a fixed time frame. Failure by platforms banned social media sites to do so.

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli while addressing representatives of the ruling Communist Party of Nepal (Integrated Marxist -Leninist) said that the apps should share revenue, pay tax in Nepal, and also work within the prescribed rules and guidelines required to protect the national interest of Nepal.

While the official statements justify the implementation of the ban, the major questions remain: was there an attempt to suppress the ban and to increase silence and in all political parties and the monarchy, Oli government, corruption, and misunderstanding disagreement and anger to increase and anger and anger?

What are the underlying factors due to the General Z campaign?

While immediate trigger 26 social media sites were accused of ban, underlying factors, such as anger over corruption, misunderstandings, and lack of accountability from the ruling class of Nepal, fuel the campaign.

Statements coming from the youth who are part of the campaign clearly underline that the campaign is not against/or against any political party, nor is it in support of the monarchy, but is a campaign directed against the locations that shrink for corruption, brother -in -law and dissatisfaction.

The campaign has come amid the background of the “Napo Kids” campaign, which has created a discussion on Nepali social media for a long time. The hashtag “Napo Kids” or “NEPO infants” were used to highlight the magnificent lifestyle that the children of the ruling class were enjoying the money of ordinary taxpayers. Many videos throw light on the opposite between the online privileged “Napo Kids” and ordinary life.

Has General Z protesters tied up with any political party or is there only movement for structural changes?

The campaigners, through various announcements and social media posts, repeatedly emphasized that they are not with any political party, nor for any political party or group. Many young sounds see it as a campaign for structural reforms and are directed against corruption.

There is both anger and frustration among young people against the corrupt ruling class. The major issues caught by the campaign spectrum include the 2017 Airbus deal in which Nepal Airlines bought two A330 wide-bodies jets.

For the misuse of a watchdog appointed under the Constitution of the country, the Commission Commission highlighted the Authority (CIA) that the deal resulted in a loss of $ 10.4 million.

Every day and increasing income inequalities between the ruling class and common citizens have also been the cause of increasing dissatisfaction. The ban on social media was not only seen as a case for dissatisfaction, but also attacked livelihood and income opportunities for many youth who lived life using social media for various purposes.

Is Nepal watching a South Asian pattern?

In recent times, people -led movements have made extensive changes in political rule in South Asia. Take the case of Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. There are broad patterns that cut these movements, which are anger directed against corrupt governance and misunderstanding systems.

In the case of Bangladesh, the movement was run by students, and Argala protests in Sri Lanka led by thousands of protesters who took to the streets on the economic crisis.

The movements cut party lines, in both cases, and wide participation of young people. Similar patterns are clear from Nepal, but it is still very early to comment on certain results. For now, the ban has been canceled, which was the immediate objective of the campaign.

How does all this worry about India?

India is closely monitoring the protests, given that India and Nepal share a close border. Any large scale movement has the ability to spread on the other side of the border. In addition, India will see the results for PM Oli-LED government.

While the two nations shared close historical relations, the recent past has seen a shifting stance to India by the current PM Ol-LED ruling coalition. For example, when India and China agreed to open the lipulek pass for trade, Nepal opted to protest.

In a demonstration of solidarity during his recent visit to China to attend the SCO summit, PM Oli attended the 80th Victory Day military parade. As a close neighbor, India will be vigilant about development in Nepal amidst transferring geopolitical mobility.
