Varun Grover’s short film KISS interrogates the idea of censorship in cinema with a delicate touch. Within 15 minutes, the film also interrogates the idea process, prejudices and themes that are connected to a film to watch. In a special interview with HT, Varun, along with Varun, spoke about why the actor and noted lyricist Swanand Kirkire spoke about why the film’s concerns, his cooperation and censorship should not be in the first place. News items that inspired kisses
Varun opened about the initial spark, due to which the film was made many years ago. He recalled, “There was a news item stating that some film was censored at that time and it was said that the censor board asked the manufacturers to reduce the kissing scene from 22 seconds to 11 seconds. I wondered what the idea was behind it?
He went to connect, “Then cut in 2021 during Kovid, when I wanted to write something and wanted to make a small film, the idea was pop -up. I did not want to do it in a comedy style, which is very easy to make fun of this mentality, but in fact it tries to understand that these people who finish the scenes, they also understand the stories of the situation.”

Swanand Kirkire knew that he wanted to be a part of the film from day one. He shared, “Varun and I go a long way. We are friends and I praise their work a lot. Earlier we have cooperated in Masuan and have always been in touch.
Varun made a kiss before his feature film All India rank. What was more challenging- a feature film or a short film? Varun says, “Every film has its own difficulties. It was a fascinating experience on the first day as my first film. It was as if I had gone into a dream! Fortunately I had a great crew to support me, who was experiencing more than me. Left to them to take care of the aspect of the film.
‘Censorship in itself is a wrong idea for a country like us’
Kiss talks about censorship in cinema. As a filmmaker, he wants more artists to speak about the issue. What can change?
He says, “I don’t think that by giving a list of things that should change, we should change things. We are very aware of the world … a lot of things can change, change. The sensor board is also doing what the society is doing … They feel that it is ready. They have the superiority of what we want to do and what not to do. Censorship.
Swanand agrees. He says, “Not only the sensor board, but many other things should be changed. It should become more human than them. I think only the censorship should be in the head of the manufacturer. When they decide why they are telling a certain story, because it is a very delicate line. The film addresses the film.
