International Yoga Day 2024: Yoga as a workout routine takes a holistic approach in healing the body and mind. Yoga postures help target specific muscle groups in the body and strengthen muscles, bones, and joints. Yoga also helps regulate the nervous system and calm the mind – this helps reduce symptoms of depression, stress, and anxiety. With personal concerns and work stress in our daily lives, it is very easy for us to feel overwhelmed. However, the constant feeling of being overwhelmed can contribute to a disordered nervous system, leading to many chronic diseases. Therefore, it is important to keep the effects of stress under control.

In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Himalayan Siddha Akshar, author and columnist, founder of Akshar Yoga Centre, said, “In today’s fast-paced world, stress has become an integral part of our lives. From work deadlines to personal commitments, we often find ourselves overwhelmed and exhausted, both physically and mentally. However, the ancient practice of yoga is a powerful antidote to stress, helping us develop inner peace and stability. By incorporating yoga asanas into our daily routine, we can effectively manage stress and enhance our overall health. Meditation practices such as Siddhoham Kriya and Super Power Meditation are also effective ways to improve your mood and mental health.”

Breath awareness:

Controlled breathing techniques known as pranayama are a fundamental aspect of yoga. Deep, conscious breathing has a calming effect on the mind and body, reducing stress levels and promoting relaxation.

Light forward bend stretch:

Forward bending postures, such as Padahasthasana (standing forward bend) and Paschimottanasana (seated forward bend), are great for relieving tension in the spine, hamstrings, and hips. They also promote a sense of grounding and encourage relaxation.

Backbends:

Backbends like Bhujangasana (Cobra Pose) and Ushtrasana (Camel Pose) open the chest and help one feel confident and positive.

Standing Asanas:

Standing poses such as Vrksasana (Tree Pose) and Virabhadrasana (Warrior Pose) require focus, balance and stability. These poses encourage present moment awareness, helping to calm the mind and develop inner peace.

Inverse:

Inverting your body through poses like Sarvangasana (Shoulder Stand) and Halasana (Plow Pose) can provide a refreshing perspective, both literally and figuratively. Inverted poses help calm the mind, improve blood circulation, and reduce stress and anxiety.

Corpse pose:

Shavasana (corpse pose) is a position of complete relaxation and surrender. This conscious relaxation can help create a sense of inner peace and clarity, leaving us feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.
