New Delhi. There has been a huge increase in foreign travel by Indians in recent years. According to Make My Trip’s report ‘How India Travels Abroad’, there has been a 32 percent increase in the number of Indians traveling abroad two or more times a year. The report is based on the period from June 2023 to May 2024 and it states that people from Maharashtra, Karnataka and Delhi are searching for information about international travel the most.
The United Arab Emirates (UAE), Thailand and the United States of America (USA) top the list of favourite destinations for Indian travellers. These countries are known for their modern infrastructure and entertainment options. At the same time, destinations like Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and Bhutan are emerging rapidly. These destinations are attracting Indian travellers due to their cultural heritage, natural beauty and unique experiences.
changing travel trends
According to Rajesh Magow, Co-Founder and Group CEO, MakeMyTrip, “With the rising incomes of Indian travellers, awareness about global cultures and ease of travel, they are now exploring more and more international and domestic destinations.”
Travel industry experts believe that the increasing presence of Indians at international tourist destinations is also expanding Indian cuisine and cultural elements at those destinations. Many destinations have also started providing special facilities for Indian tourists, such as Hindi-language tour guides and Indian restaurants.
Increasing demand for luxury and business class travel
The report also shows that Indian travellers are increasingly interested in luxury travel. Searches for business class flights in the international sector have increased by 10 per cent. Bookings have also increased in luxury hotels and resorts, where Indian travellers are now looking for a more comfortable and luxurious experience than before. Apart from this, the trend of ‘workcation’ i.e. holiday along with work is also increasing rapidly. People are now looking for places where they can enjoy work and holiday together.
The increasing number of Indian travelers and their search for new destinations are positive signs for the travel industry. This shows that Indian travelers no longer want to limit themselves to traditional destinations, but are also showing interest in exploring new and unknown destinations.
