New Delhi. Recently, while talking to news agency PTI, Nitin Gadkari said that he has resolved to completely get rid of more than 36 crore petrol and diesel vehicles running in the country and he also wants to reduce the GST on hybrid vehicles. When the Union Minister was asked whether it was possible for India to completely get rid of petrol and diesel cars, he said, ‘100 per cent’. Meanwhile, a data has also come out where it can be seen that the market of CNG and electric/hybrid cars has grown rapidly in the Indian market.
A data has come out from Statista where it can be seen that the market share of CNG and electric/hybrid cars has increased from 2020 to 2023. Here the figures of car sales in India between 2020 to 2023 can be seen according to fuel type. Let’s see the complete data.

Data from Statista.
Talking about the figures of the year 2020, during this period the market share of petrol cars in the market was 77 percent. Which was 74 percent in 2021, 68 percent in 2022 and 65 percent in 2023. That is, if you see the trend, this figure is continuously decreasing. Whereas, if we talk about diesel cars, the market share of diesel cars in 2020 was 18 percent. The same figure continued in the next year i.e. 2021 also. After this, it increased by 1 percent to 19 percent in 2022 and next year this figure again came to 18 percent. That means, more or less, there was not much change in the market share of diesel cars.
Now if we talk about CNG cars, the market share of these cars was 5 percent in 2020, 7 percent in 2021, 11 percent in 2022 and 13 percent in 2023. Here the trend can be seen increasing. After this, finally if we talk about electric and hybrid cars, the market share of these cars was 0.20 percent in 2020, 7 percent in 2021, 11 percent in 2022 and 13 percent in 2023. Here too the figures are increasing.
