This plane took off from Delhi
Actually, this Indian Airlines flight that landed at Lahore Airport was the same IC-423, which had flown from Palam Airport in Delhi to Amritsar on 29 September 1981. Along with 6 crew members, about 111 passengers were also present in this flight. The journey was about to be completed, when five passengers got up from their seats and moved towards different directions. Some took position at the rear of the aircraft, while some came and stood at the front. Apart from this, two passengers entered the cockpit. As soon as they entered the cockpit, everyone took out the daggers and grenades hidden inside their clothes.

Almost all the passengers gasped when they saw hand grenades and daggers in the hands of the people standing in front. By now he had realized that the plane had been hijacked. Yes, this fear of the passengers turned out to be completely justified. This plane was hijacked by five Khalistani terrorists. The Khalistani terrorists present in the cockpit had by now given orders to the pilot to divert the plane towards Lahore instead of Amritsar. Security agencies came into action
As soon as the news of plane hijacking broke, the security agencies of not only India but also Pakistan came into action. India was continuously pressurizing Pakistan for the safe release of passengers and crew. India’s pressure worked and Pakistani officials started talks with the hijackers. The hijackers had two demands. First – Jarnail Singh Bhindranwala and his other associates imprisoned in Indian jails should be released. Second- 5 lakh US dollars. After some time, the then Indian Ambassador to Pakistan Natwar Singh also reached Lahore Airport to negotiate with the hijackers. The conversation lasted for several hours.

Finally this big decision was taken
Despite several hours of talks, no agreement was reached. By now the SSG commandos of the Pakistani Army had taken a big decision. On the pretext of delivering food items to the passengers, commandos entered the aircraft and attacked the hijackers. All the passengers shivered badly after seeing the fight that suddenly started between the hijackers and the SSG commandos. They were afraid that if the hijackers, angry with this operation, fired a single grenade, not a single one of them would survive. But, nothing like this happened. During this operation by the Pak Army, none of the passengers and crew present in the plane were even scratched. After some time, the plane was sent to India with all the passengers and crew. At the same time, Pak Army arrested all the hijackers and put them behind the bars. Pakistani court sentenced all the hijackers to life imprisonment. After completing life imprisonment, the main hijacker named Satnam Singh returned to India. As soon as he reached India, Satnam was arrested and a fresh case was tried against him. However, it is a different matter that he was later released saying that he had suffered the punishment for his crime in Pakistan.
