At that time, his boss tried to force him to work too many hours during a shift, causing Mr. Ravichandran to hand in his resignation notice.

The court decided that Mr Ravichandran had been “summarily dismissed”, meaning he was fired immediately while he was still working during his notice period. By doing this the company broke the law because they did not give him the one week’s notice that he was legally entitled to.

It said, “It was not alleged by the Defendant that the Claimant had done anything to entitle the Claimant to dismiss him without notice. Therefore, the Claimant was wrongfully dismissed and is entitled to one week’s pay in lieu of notice.”

Following a hearing in September, the Tribunal Court ordered the following payments to be made to Mr Ravichandran – a core payment of £62,690 to compensate for discrimination and job loss.
