New Delhi, November 11 (Language) Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said on Tuesday that India will not compromise with the interests of farmers, dairies and workers in trade deals.
He also said that India is looking at new markets like Russia for the country’s fisheries sector, which is facing problems due to heavy duties in the US.
He said that India and America are negotiating a good proposed bilateral trade agreement.
“We are working for a good trade agreement. India is not going to compromise with the interests of farmers, dairies and workers… We are working on a fair, equitable and balanced trade agreement,” he said at the Udyog Samagam 2025 – a conference of state industry and commerce ministers – here.
He said, “We want a fair, equitable and balanced trade deal (with the US). If it happens, it could happen any day, could happen tomorrow, could happen next month, could happen next year… but as a government, we are preparing for everything.”
India and America are negotiating a bilateral trade agreement. So far five rounds of talks have been completed.
Meanwhile, an official said another round of talks may not be necessary.
“The US has to come back to us. India is negotiating the most comprehensive and comprehensive and WTO complaint trade agreement,” the official said. He said that India is carefully protecting its sensitive areas.
On the India-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement, the official said that negotiations are almost complete.
New Zealand Trade Minister Todd McLay will visit India on Friday to give impetus to trade talks.
On the India-EU trade deal, the official said talks are in progress and EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic is expected to visit India in the second week of December for trade talks.
