Director Imtiaz Ali revealed in a recent interview that he was ‘deeply influenced’ when he read the Rig Veda and the Bhagavad Gita at a very young age. Speaking to Ranveer Allahbadia, the director opened up about why he chose these holy texts in the first place. ‘I got very emotional’
Imtiaz said that he was reading a book which had a creation hymn from the Rig Veda at the beginning and he was deeply impressed by it. He said, “I could not forget it; I understood what it meant. The Bhagavad Gita has also been an important book in my life, it is still the book I keep on my desk. In the sixth grade, I was travelling alone by train and money was tight. And ironically, this was the only book I could buy at the railway station. I thought people around me would find it strange and wonder why I was reading it.”
I am in favour of simplicity of expression.
Imtiaz also revealed that when he started reading the Bhagavad Gita, he was surprised to see how easy it was to understand. He said, “There were some things that I had to re-read ten times to understand, but I got it. I used to read a few pages every day. It is deeply ingrained in me now; I am lucky to have been exposed to it at such a young age. It has helped me understand people better. I have also read other religious texts. They are interesting and entertaining, if I find something that appeals to me, it makes my day.”

Imtiaz recently directed Amar Singh Chamkila, starring Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra in the lead roles. The film, released on Netflix, is a biographical drama based on the life of the Punjabi singer. The film narrates the story of the fame and murder of the famous singer and his wife Amarjot Kaur. The film received good response from fans and critics.
