In a study published in April in Nature Communications Biology, a team of researchers from Universe de Montreal shed new lights on how caffeine can modify sleep and affect brain recovery – both physical and cognitive – overnight. The research was led by Philip Tholke, who was a research trainee in Udem’s cognitive and computational neuroscience laboratory (Coco Lab), and LAB director Karim Zerbi, a psychology professor and mixed Professor and mixed – was cum -reduced by the researcher at the AI Institute.

Studies Conclusions:

In UDIM’s Center for Advanced Research in Sleep Medicine, working with Sleep-end-aging psychology professor Julie Carrier and her team, scientists used AI and Electroncephalography (EEG) to study caffeine effects on sleep.

He first showed that caffeine enhances the complexity of the brain signals and increases the brain “criticism” during sleep. Interestingly, it was more clear in young adults.

“Criticism describes a state of the brain which is balanced between order and anarchy,” Jerbi said.

“It’s like an orchestra: very calm and nothing is nothing, very chaotic and cacoffney. Criticism is that there is a happy medium where brain activity is both organized and flexible. In this state, the brain works better: It can process information efficiently, can quickly adapt, teach and take a decision with chapter.”

Added carrier: “Caffeine stimulates the brain and pushes it into a state of significance, where it is more awakened, alert and reactive, while it is useful during the day for concentration, this state can interfere with rest at night: the brain will neither rest nor recover properly.”

Researchers also discovered striking changes in the electrical rhythm of the brain during sleep: Caffeine saw slow oscillations such as Thea and alpha waves – generally deeper, restorative sleep – and stimulated the beta wave activity, which is more common during waking and mental engagement. “These changes suggest that even during sleep, the brain remains more active in the influence of caffeine, in low restructural positions,” Jerbi says, which also holds Canada Research Chairman in Computer Neuroscience and Cognitive Neurizing. “This change in the rhythmic activity of the brain can help explain why caffeine affects the efficiency with which the brain cures during the night, with possible results for memory processing.”

The study also showed that caffeine effects on brain dynamics were much more pronounced in young adults between the ages of 20 to 27 years than the middle -aged participants in the age of 41 to 58, especially during REM sleep, the phase associated with dreaming.
