The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert as severe smog continues in Delhi-NCR, stating that shallow to moderate fog conditions will persist in the coming days. The weather department in its latest release said shallow to moderate fog/haze will prevail throughout the day morning and night and the air quality is likely to deteriorate, posing significant health risks to residents of Delhi-NCR.
Dense brown smog has engulfed Delhi for the third consecutive day on Tuesday, November 19, and the pollution level remains in the ‘severe plus’ category at a worrying 488. With pollution levels at alarming levels, GRAP Stage 4 guidelines have been issued in Delhi-NCR, banning the entry of trucks in the city. All classes up to class 12th have been made online.

“There is a possibility of smog/moderate to dense fog in the morning. After this, during the afternoon the wind speed from north-west direction will reduce to less than 10 km per hour. After this it will reduce to less than 06 km per hour from north-west direction during evening and night. There is a possibility of smog/light fog in the evening/night.
Next day, “mist or shallow to moderate fog” is likely to continue in the morning. The wind speed will gradually increase during the day. “There is a possibility of smog/light fog in the evening/night,” it said.
On Friday, November 22, “Morning smog/light to moderate fog. After this, during the afternoon the wind speed from north-west direction will become 06-08 km per hour. There is a possibility of smog/light fog in the evening/night.”
Experts have blamed stagnant weather conditions, burning of crop residues in neighboring states and local emissions for the worsening situation. Authorities have advised people to limit outdoor activities and use masks to reduce exposure to toxic air.
