The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Rurki scientists have discovered a possible drug, which can probably be used to treat chikungunya, a mosquito -borne viral disease that causes fever, joint pain, muscle pain and rash.
The drug widely used for HIV treatment, according to Ephiranz, can serve as an effective therapy for Chikungunya disease, as it is shown to reduce chikungunya virus replication in models of vitro and mice.
This discovery is part of a study supported by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) by IIT Roorkee.
The study found that Efavirenz was able to reduce the level of viruses in lab-Gro cell cultures and in an infected mice models.
According to the National Center for Vector-based disease control, Chikungunya is a recurring public health concern in India, in which cases have been reported in many states every year. In addition, there is no approved antiviral treatment, especially for Chikungunia.

Additionally, it was also found during the study that the affidavit affects the replica of the Sindbis virus which belongs to Chikungunya.
The first author of the study, Dr. Sankate Nehul said that findings suggest that affiviranz may intervene quickly with the virus in its replication process.
“Since this drug is already widely used for HIV treatment, further clinical trials can detect their ability for chikungunya treatment, reduce the time and cost required for the development of new antiviral drugs,” Dr. Nehul said.

“Our study provides initial scientific evidence that unanimous can be a possible antiviral drug for chikungunya treatment. However, clinical trials will require to assess its effectiveness in patients with chikungunya, ”Pro. Tomar said.

“This study is a step towards finding a possible solution for mosquito-borne viral infections,” he said.
In particular, research has been published in a scientific magazine reviewed by a colleague.
However, IIT Rurki stated that the findings do not yet confirm Efavirenz as a treatment for chikungunia and additional studies, and in patients the treatment of chikungunya will require clinical tests to evaluate its safety and effectiveness.
