In these, reincarnation and out of body experiences have been highlighted as important topics.

A unique course called ‘Indian Knowledge System’ is in the news at IIT Mandi, which has made reincarnation and out-of-body experiences compulsory subjects for BTech students.
This decision has sparked a lot of debate on the academic validity and scientific basis of such subjects. According to a report by Careers 360, the Indian Knowledge Systems course aims to introduce students to various philosophical and cultural concepts rooted in Indian traditions.
In these, reincarnation and out of body experiences have been highlighted as important topics.
The course ‘Introduction to Consciousness and Well-being’ offered by the newly established Department of Indian Knowledge Systems is compulsory for all B. Tech students.
The course covers a variety of topics, including “Principles of Consciousness”, “Effects of IKS Art and Dance on the Mind”, “Ultimate Consciousness” and “Anatomy and Functioning of the Physical Body”, insights from Western Medicine and Ayurveda, “Gut-Mind Connection” and Meditation.
The report said that a member of the IIT-Mandi community, on the condition of anonymity, criticised the curriculum, saying, “All the courses in IKS are full of pseudo-scientific topics.”
The inclusion of these topics has been criticised. Critics argue that teaching reincarnation and similar topics as part of the engineering curriculum could undermine the scientific rigour expected at an institution like IIT.
They term these subjects as pseudoscientific and question their relevance in the B.Tech curriculum, which typically focuses on engineering theories and empirical studies.
In an email response to Careers 360, IIT Mandi said, “Introduction to Mindfulness and Holistic Well-being, approved by the Senate of IIT Mandi, is a compulsory course for undergraduate students. The course focuses on universal value systems that lead to holistic development of students. The curriculum includes modules such as yoga, guided meditation, physical exercises, and community service. The curriculum represents a pioneering approach to integrating holistic wellness practices. The program has been developed under the mandate of the Ministry of Education and with the approval of the Senate.”
