Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) launched a Cyber Security Center with the intention of promoting fundamental and applied research that spur innovations in the country.
The Cyber Security Center will work towards leading advancements in blockchain, security for AI models, cryptography, quantum security and IoT security.
The ‘Centre for Cyber Security, Trust and Reliability’ (CyStar) was inaugurated in the presence of Professor V Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras, Center Coordinator Professor Shweta Aggarwal, Professor Chester Rebeiro and Professor John Augustine, faculty of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. . , IIT Madras and many academicians and industry representatives from India and abroad attended.
“With the rise of cyber threats, not only for financial gain but with targeted sector-wide attacks on critical infrastructure, it is very important that we arrive at proactive cyber defense mechanisms to protect our nation. In this context, such efforts are extremely important,” said Professor V Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras.

CyStar’s key research, industry and government partners include the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and the Ministry of Education, Vitesco Technologies, Kaspersky, IDBI Bank, LG India, Saptang Labs, Algorand, Indo-French Center for Promotion of Advanced Research, among others. and the National Security Coordination Secretariat, among others.
“We are pleased and excited to launch this centre, which will bring together people with diverse expertise to study the complex problem of cyber security. Our approach is multidimensional. Our aim is to contribute to everything from fundamental research to real-world applications to fostering start-ups and everything in between,” said Center Coordinator Professor Shweta Aggarwal.
“India is a federal country with a large number of highly distributed social and business networks with diverse security needs. CyStar’s vision is to empower individuals in this ecosystem to secure their lives and businesses through platforms that are designed with security, trust and reliability in mind,” said CyStar Coordinator Professor John Augustine.

PsyStar at IIT Madras will develop a comprehensive, multi-pronged strategy to address emerging cyber security challenges driven by AI and the post-quantum era. This approach will focus on protecting critical national infrastructure, providing holistic protection against these advanced technological threats. The press release mentions that the center seeks to build a knowledge and innovation ecosystem where industry leaders, scholars and government institutions can integrate and apply advances in knowledge to real-time products or services in cybersecurity.
