A total of 177 students graduated from the IIT Madras BS (Data Science and Applications) course after completing their degrees and diplomas.
According to a press release from IIT Madras, the first batch of 10 BS graduates were awarded their course completion certificates. These students took the fast track to complete the credit requirements of the 4-year BS program in 3 years.
“It is really amazing to see the students who have gone through this program, as I saw an IAS officer, a cardiologist and even an octogenarian. This program really democratizes education without diluting the quality of the program…I have no doubt that each of you are going to be extremely successful in your careers. There will be a lot of companies who will be very keen to recruit you after knowing about this program. I congratulate the faculty here at IIT Madras who have created a program that is going to have a huge impact on the education system in India,” said Mr. Nalinikant Gollagunta, IIT Madras alumnus (1998 B.Tech), CEO, Automotive Division, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd.
IIT Madras said the programme has become the world’s first 4-year BS degree in Data Science and Applications, offering students the option to exit earlier at the Foundation, Diploma or BSc degree level.
During the event, 26 students were awarded their degrees who had chosen to exit the program with a BSc in Programming and Data Science. Another 120 students received their provisional BSc degree certificates while they are currently pursuing their BS degrees. In addition, a total of 122 students received their Diplomas in Data Science, and 19 students received their Diplomas in Programming and 10 students received both a Diploma in Data Science and a Diploma in Programming. The press release noted that 411 students were awarded provisional double diplomas as they continue studying at the degree level.
“As we see hundreds of students receiving their degrees and provisional certificates, we are excited that we as an institution have contributed to your professional growth. With the advent of AI and large-scale digitisation, as well as advanced communication technologies like 5G, India aspires to become a multi trillion economy as soon as possible. This essentially means that very innovative, interesting, new and unconventional types of jobs are going to emerge. And each of these jobs will definitely have a significant component of data analytics and AI that will guide the system developer to build affordable and effective products,” IIT Madras Director Prof. V. Kamakoti said in a video message.
