Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati in collaboration with Samagra Shiksha Assam organized a Science and Mathematics Olympiad to enhance the sense of scientific curiosity among students.
According to a press release from IIT Guwahati, more than 1.14 lakh students from 3,828 schools across Assam participated in the programme, which aimed to boost capabilities among students in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) subjects.
PRBR Professor Parameshwar K Iyer, Dean, IIT Guwahati, said, “IIT Guwahati is working closely with the Education Department of Assam to increase STEM activities across the state and promote it through vibrant activities like Olympiads.”
IIT Guwahati was informed that the objectives of the Olympiad were to:
To develop a culture of scientific inquiry and mathematical reasoning among school students
· To identify and nurture talented individuals in the field of STEM subjects
· To provide a competitive platform for students to showcase their skills and abilities
· To raise awareness about the importance of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education among students and teachers
· To promote innovation and critical thinking skills among students
The Olympiad was conducted in two phases: an OMR-based examination for secondary school students across the state, followed by a state-level round. The press release informed that the district level examination was held on March 18, 2024.
The top 2 artists from each district were selected to participate in the final round of the Olympiad at IIT Guwahati. This round provided a platform for the finalists to interact with peers from across the state. The institute was informed that 62 finalists from classes 9th and 10th competed in the final round held on March 30, 2024, in which 3 state winners emerged.
