IIT Delhi said that COE will do academic, technical and policy research by identifying gaps and challenges in the current energy transition period in India.
CERC, IIT Delhi, Grid-India Sign MoU
The Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC), IIT Delhi, and Grid Controller of India (Grid-India) have signed a memorandum (MOU) for the establishment of the Center for Excellence (COE) in IIT Delhi. This COE will focus on regulation, policies, electricity markets and grid operations of the power sector. This will serve as a knowledge hub, giving regulatory commissions, power system operators, utilities and other organizations the necessary expertise to meet their specific job requirements.

The aim of the Coe aims to make informed decisions informed in the creation of effective rules through collaboration and analysis. The COE tries to bridge the gap between industry and academics, finding a local solution to solve the current and emerging challenges in power system operations. Additionally, COE will serve as a platform to develop academic programs, which will improve better laws and better regulatory techniques.
Director of IIT Delhi Prof.. Speaking about Rangan Banerjee, said, “We are excited about the new center of excellence in the regulation of the power sector. We are ready to work closely with Grid-India and CERC to provide research and policy inputs to change our power sector.”
CERC President Jishanu Barua said, “The Center is expected to play an important role in increasing the expertise of human resources for the region and is likely to work as a bridge between academics and physicians.”
Grid-India Chairman and Managing Director Sameer Chandra Saxena said, “Grid-India is ready for this cooperation. This initiative is a significant step towards advising regulatory capacity in the power sector, research, promoting innovation and informing regulatory research for a more flexible and future power sector ecosystem.”
There are five main areas of functionality in the Center for Excellence (Coe):
1. India’s current energy infections conduct educational, technical and policy research to identify gaps and challenges, including rules, markets and grid operations.
2. Study the system to inform the decisions about grid practices and related rules.
3. Provide training, skill development and capacity-building activities to create a special task force and increase the skills of existing regulators, system operators and other stakeholders. This includes short -term training in quantitative techniques, tariff models, modeling and forecast technology, electricity market, etc.
4. Develop a knowledge hub and information base to address current requirements and future regulatory, operational and strategic challenges.
5. Serve as a drain to offer academic programs in IIT Delhi.
