Indira Gandhi National Open University, IGNOU, is launching a new distance learning programme Master of Business Administration Programme (Agribusiness Management) to prepare competent business professionals to boost agribusiness and farmer economy.
A press release issued by IGNOU stressed the importance of agriculture and stated that it is the backbone of the national economy in terms of providing livelihood and food security to the growing population of the country.
According to IGNOU, the premise of the MBAABM programme is based on the fact that in spite of significant growth in the agricultural sector, there is a need to develop management competencies among the farming community and allied stakeholders involved in backward and advanced agricultural activities.

Further, the release stated that it is challenging to meet the needs of agribusiness professionals and ensure easy access to management courses for stakeholders in agriculture and allied sectors.
To meet this need, the MBAABM programme aims to develop business professionals to profitably manage agricultural businesses and agro-based industries, the release said.
The release further said that the MBAABM programme will enhance managerial skills and provide need-based education, enhance efficiency in the agriculture sector and generate greater livelihoods and profitability, thereby improving the socio-economic condition of people involved in agribusiness.
According to IGNOU, the MBAABM programme aims to prepare competent business professionals in agriculture, food, rural and allied sectors. It aims to equip professionals with specific managerial skills, develop expertise in managing techno-commercial aspects of agribusiness and provide the knowledge required to effectively address national development plans, agricultural policies and global trade.

MBAABM targets a wide range of participants, including fresh graduates, progressive farmers and agricultural extension workers, and caters to the needs of traders, middlemen, technicians and managers of agricultural industries and enterprises dealing with agricultural inputs and outputs.
Professionals from NGOs, co-operatives, FPOs, SHGs, corporate entities and financial and marketing organisations will also benefit, IGNOU said in a press release.
Features of the MBAABM Program:
- To equip students with comprehensive skills in management and agribusiness.
- Focus on agribusiness management and policies, project management, commodity trading, production and supply chain management, etc.
- To provide detailed education on management aspects of agribusiness activities in horticulture production, post-harvest management, livestock and agricultural equipment etc.

Eligibility:
Candidates with a bachelor’s degree in any subject can pursue MBA Agribusiness Management programme.
About the classes and admission schedule:
- The MBAABM program is of 2 years duration and can be completed in a maximum period of 4 years.
- Admission is open for July 2024 session.
