Saying he is a committed Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh volunteer, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has said that he believes “politics is a means of social and economic reform”.
Gadkari is one of the most popular cabinet ministers in the government led by outgoing Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The Union minister is seeking a third Lok Sabha term from Nagpur and is pitted against Congress’s Vikas Thackeray.
talking to Hindustan Times Ahead of the Lok Sabha elections 2024, Gadkari said: “I am not a career politician, but a social worker. I believe that politics is a means of social and economic reform. Politics consists of 80% social work and 20% politics. I am doing social work, especially in the field of agriculture, water conservation and biofuels. I am just an average person, not a highly qualified person. I am not that intelligent…but I have been awarded six D.Litt from different universities.
Gadkari said he has received respect and love from all sections of people who appreciate his work as a minister. “It’s beyond my imagination. I still feel I don’t really deserve what I’ve got. It’s the sheer love of people. I know my limits,” Nitin Gadkari told Hindustan Times,
On the opposition’s apprehension that the BJP government will amend the Constitution after the Lok Sabha elections, Nitin Gadkari said that the opposition is trying to scare people by spreading lies.
“The main features and basic structure of the Constitution cannot be changed. In the Kesavananda Bharati case, the Supreme Court held that no part of the Constitution, including the fundamental rights, is beyond the amending power of the Parliament, but the basic structure cannot be changed…”
Gadkari said that by pushing such a false narrative, the opposition was trying to “mislead” minorities, Dalits etc. to get votes. The minister said that they will not succeed in such misleading campaigns.
Selection of next portfolio
Speaking on his possible portfolio if the BJP wins power again, Gadkari expressed his unwavering commitment as a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh volunteer, BJP and social worker.
Nitin Gadkari said he does not think about tomorrow and is a committed Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh volunteer, BJP and social worker. “This is my identity. You may be a former Chief Minister, a former Minister or a former MP but you will always be a party worker. I am satisfied with whatever I am. I am a dedicated BJP worker with strong convictions, not a politician with calculations.”
Gadkari said that he believes in Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas [equal development], He said, the NDA government under the leadership of Modi is doing commendable work. He said, “I am confident that we will form the government again for the third time. I will be comfortable with whatever responsibility is assigned to me.”
