Archaeologists in Poland found a medieval night skeleton buried under a closed ice cream shop. He started working on it in the city center in 2023.
He first found a decorated samadhi showing a knight in the armor. In July, he lifted it and found a full male skeleton from the 13th or 14th century. It is of an adult male. CNN reported that the rare Gotland shows the tomb made of limestone, wearing a chainmel.
The knight is shown standing upright with a sword raised sword, meaning that he was in a high position. Such carvings were rare during that period because most of the tombs had only flat inscriptions or crosses.
This grave is special because both artwork and burial site are untouched. The man’s skeleton found under the stone was in excellent position. He was longer between 5’7 “and 5’11” compared to most of the men of that time.
CNN quoted archaeologist Sylvia Kurzinska as saying, “The cemetery has been well preserved, given that it was carved with soft limestone and underground for centuries.”
He said, “Knight is shown standing upright with an uplift sword – a posture is likely to symbolize the authority and high social status,” she said.
He was important
No object was buried with him, but the style of the tomb suggests that he was important. His tomb was among the 300 others near the oldest church in Gadanksk, built of oak cut in 1140.
The church stood in the early strongholds used from 11th to 14th century. According to the publication, the region was important for faith, strength and burial in the history of GDANSK.
Despite being partially damaged, the design is still clear. The stone is about 5 feet long. This discovery is considered one of the most important of Poland in years. Experts consider the discovery of “extraordinary importance”.
According to Kurzinska, it is “one of the most important archaeological discoveries in Poland in recent years”.
