Students, parents and stakeholders across the country are upset over the recent developments in the cancellation and postponement of competitive exams like NEET UG, UGC NET, and CSIR UGC NET being conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA).
The Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) on Wednesday staged a protest demanding the dismantling of the NTA and the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and demanded immediate redressal of concerns. The opposition has been demanding the dismantling of the testing agency following reports of irregularities in the conduct of exams.
Hindustan Times conducted a survey to know people’s opinion on whether NTA should conduct the NEET exam. Here are the results.
A total of 469 people have participated in our survey, out of which 19% (91) people believe that NTA should continue as the conducting agency for NEET. 74% (355) people are of the opinion that NTA should not continue as the conducting agency for NEET. Meanwhile, 4% (23) participants are unsure whether NTA should continue as the conducting agency for NEET or not (at the time of filing the story).
Meanwhile, a seven-member panel headed by K Radhakrishnan, Chairman, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and Chairman, Board of Governors, Indian Institute of Technology-Kanpur, will give its recommendations to the Education Ministry within the next 2 months on improving the mechanism of the examination process, improving data security protocols and structure and functioning of the NTA.
As part of the review, the panel aims to reach out to students and parents, understand their concerns and seek suggestions that can help improve and establish a tamper-proof system for entrance examinations in the country.
According to Raj Vardhan Dixit, OSD Chairman, Noida International Institute of Medical Science (NIIMS) College and Hospital, restructuring the National Testing Agency could indeed be beneficial. “This could include increasing transparency, streamlining operations and adopting sophisticated technology for efficiency. Stakeholder involvement and feedback channels should be strengthened to ensure alignment with healthcare requirements,” he said.
Similarly, Gaurav Tyagi, founder of Career Expert, said that restructuring the NTA could increase its efficiency and credibility. “The restructuring could include increasing transparency in exam administration, implementing strict anti-cheating procedures and improving the dispute adjudication process,” Tyagi said.
Meanwhile, the Kerala Assembly on Wednesday unanimously passed a resolution demanding the Central government to conduct a comprehensive probe into the alleged irregularities in the conduct of NEET and UGC NET examinations by the National Testing Agency (NTA).
The gathering also demanded the Central government to take immediate action to allay the fear and anxiety of lakhs of students and parents awaiting medical admissions.
