Foldable phones have been in vogue for many years, but their entire display was not made of glass. Now a phone that looks like a single screen folds from the middle. In fact, the screen in most foldable phones is not LCD but OLED. The image you see on the phone is made up of millions of color specks. There are different ways to get images from these specks. These methods are called LCD, OLED, Micro LED or Mini LED.

The material on which millions of coloured specs are placed is called the substrate. For many years this substrate has been made of glass. As you know, glass cannot bend too much. The use of plastic display instead made foldable phones possible. But scientists did not do only this. Apart from this, they also found solutions to many problems. For example, they also made arrangements to ensure that the display does not get damaged when the phone is opened and closed repeatedly for a long time.

Difference between LCD and OLED
In LCD displays, you need a layer of screen to provide backlight. The screen that is installed to provide backlight makes the LCD thick. But this does not happen in OLED. Its pixels light up when power is supplied. That is why the screen of OLED becomes thin and folds better.

Layers of OLED
OLED display also has many layers but they are very thin. The names of these layers are as follows.

• Substrate Layer- This is the base of any screen. In foldable phones, it is made of plastic.
• TFT Layer- Next comes the TFT layer. Its job is to control the power received by each pixel. It is a kind of power grid.
• OLED layer- A layer made of pixels that releases light. It has red, green and blue subpixels. Each pixel releases as much light as the power these subpixels receive.
• Cover layer- This is the topmost layer. The job of this layer is to protect the other layers. When you operate a touch phone, you touch this layer. Usually in foldable phones, it is made of polyimide, a form of plastic, but in recent times, manufacturers are also using super thin glass in its manufacture.
