New Delhi. The explosion of 1000 pagers in Lebanon has created a stir. About 3000 people were injured in this incident. According to reports, these were with the fighters of the terrorist organization Hezbollah. Pagers are rarely used in the world today. What is a pager and how does it work?
A pager is a small telecommunication device that receives radio signals from the paging network. The transmitters in the pager broadcast signals at a specific frequency. Other pagers in the range of these transmitters receive these messages at the same frequency. The message sent by the pager is encoded in a signal. Signals of numeric-only pagers are usually a series of beeps or numeric codes. While the signals of alphanumeric pagers are more complex.
The encoded signals are then sent to the paging network via a central transmitter. These signals are broadcast via radio frequencies. The other pager receives these signals via its antenna. These are set to a specific frequency that the paging network is using.
The next step is decoding at the receiver pager. The receiving pager decodes the signal. Decoding means converting the message which has come in the form of tones or codes into numbers or in alphanumeric pagers these codes are converted into text which the receiver can read. In advanced pagers the receiver can also reply. It is worth noting that paging networks are better than any cellular network because they transmit messages at very high frequency.
How is it different from a smartphone?
While pagers use radio signals, smartphones depend on cellular networks. The use of pagers is very limited. It is used to send messages or alert someone. It does not have the facility of making calls or multitasking. Many pagers do not even have the option of replying. On the other hand, smartphones can do many things like making calls, sending messages, internet, video streaming and many more. The storage capacity of a pager is very less compared to a smartphone.
Why does Hezbollah use them
It is generally believed that pagers are more secure. They work at a very high frequency, so they prove to be very reliable in sending or receiving messages. They are mainly used for closed places where dependence on phones etc. can delay work. For example, hospitals, securities companies and emergency services. They are cheap and you do not need any SIM etc. to operate it. There is no additional cost on this. It is also believed that hacking them is comparatively very difficult. However, this has been refuted in some reports.
