Senior officials were quoted as saying that Gaganyaan astronauts can be safely rescued during the return mission from 48 backup points that the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) has identified across the world. Hindustan Times.
A senior ISRO official associated with the Gaganyaan mission said that if everything goes well, the module will be able to land in Indian waters.
“There are also backup plans if this is not achieved because we cannot take any risks to ensure the safety of the crew as this is a manned space flight. For this, we have marked possible points where the capsule could land,” the official was quoted as saying H.T.
Initially, the Indian space agency had finalized two landing locations in Indian waters – the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal. But later, the landing site was finalized in the Arabian Sea due to the turbulent waters and unpredictability of the Bay of Bengal, the official said.
ISRO’s human spaceflight program is expected to put India on the global map of human spaceflight countries. Upon successful completion, India will join the US, Russia and China among countries that have active human spaceflight programs.
Unmanned testing for Gaganyaan is expected to begin later this year. ISRO is expected to complete seven test launches under Gaganyaan by March next year.
The space agency has recently revealed the first four astronauts selected for India’s human spaceflight programme, Gaganyaan. The astronauts are test pilots with the Indian Air Force, and will be part of the country’s first manned space mission which is scheduled to take off by the end of next year.
Designated Astronaut-Wing Badges were presented to astronauts – Group Captains Prashant Balakrishnan Nair, Ajit Krishnan and Angad Pratap and Wing Commander Subhanshu Shukla – by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at an event at the Vikram Sarabhai Space Center at ISRO headquarters in Thiruvananthapuram.
India’s manned space mission is being completely controlled by ISRO, which is working with partner vendors for a completely indigenous technology stack for Gaganyaan’s space infrastructure.
This marks a key differentiating factor between India and the US, which contracts private companies like SpaceX, Northrop Grumman and Lockheed Martin for a wide range of commercial as well as human spaceflight projects.
