The historical city of Maheshwar, located along the calm banks of the Narmada River in Madhya Pradesh, is caught by the Rajasi Ahilya Fort, resonant with a 5,000 -year -old heritage’s inheritance and a rhythmic claater of echoed. It is here that the famous Maheshwari saree was born, the work of one hand loom that weaves the legacy of her people, palace and timeless past together.
Wandering through the ghats of Maheshwar, you will hear a gentle, rhythmic tapping, alike from homes and workshops and listening to a wooden shuttle. These are the sounds of loom, work by skilled artisans who work day and outside to make these grand Maheshwari sarees.
What did you not know about Maheshwari sarees: How did all this begin?
A royal thread of history
Maheshwar is known for her beautiful textiles in the 18th century, when a famous Maratha Rani Rani Ahilibai Holkar invited the skilled weavers of Surat and South India to start weaving in their capital. His dream was not only to revive the local economy, but to create a cloth that reflected the elegance of his court and the peace of Narmada. Thus, Maheshwari saree was born, light in the form of a whisper, bold in design, and eternal in style.
Each saree was originally woven with cotton and silk, adorned with motifs inspired by temples, ghats and waves of holy river. Even today, leheria (wave), chitai (mat), and flower (flower) patterns of Maheshwar whispers for Maheshwar’s architecture splendor.
Touch of artisans: knows that Maheshwari makes sarees regularly different:
Maheshwari is their light drape to separate sarees, which is usually woven in cotton and silk mixtures, and their specific boundaries made of zari, peacock blue, parrots green, deep maroon and elegant colors of gold.
Meet artisans behind beautiful sarees:
Hasmad Ansari and Asim Ansari, both father and son, have been in the business of making Maheshwari sarees for more than 40 years respectively. What was done by Mr. Hasmad Ansari’s father is now being done by his son with grace.
Talking to the Ansari family, I came to know that they have not been seen back ever since they started family business. Asim Ansari told HT lifestyle, “We installed the loom of weaving at our house. Everything – from source of raw materials to weaving – is in one place”. Establishment requires initial hard work and investment to establish the loom and once the business grows, he established 200 karghe with a team of more than 200 weavers.
In the mid -50s, a woman Manubai Kavat has been weaving sarees for almost 30 years. She says weaving helps her to earn so that she can take care of her family, including a son, daughter -in -law and her paralyzed husband.
Abdul Ansari and Nazar Ansari, two brothers who run their handcuffs, say they have been running their loom for 30 years. They would like to pass this skill to their sons as well.
However this may look simple, which requires Maheshwari sarees require efforts, time, patience and skill. Each saree takes the end of day, sometimes weeks, finishing.
The construction of the saree begins with sourcing of all raw materials. From cotton threads to zari thread, everything is from India. Cotton is mostly sourced from Coimbatore, Zari to Surat, and silk is bought from Bangalore, with officials of the Indian retail chain Fabindia, who is supporting the heritage handloom fabric.
Development of Maheshwari sarees:
In the late 18th century, what began as an interest by Queen Ahilibai Holkar, developed in the era of colonial and independence. Its Regal and royal presence made it a favorite among the British families, with a widespread change in the Indian hand loom industry.
With the recognition of the government of the craft, today’s Maheshwari saree is a fusion of cultural heritage with modernity. With some twists made on the border of the saree, the boundary and palus still remain complicated, presenting the check, and patterns.
Today, there are many power looms producing Maheshwari sarees, but people taking for authentic handloom contribute to the livelihood of weavers. The mild nature of the clothes has made it perfect for every day and every occasion.
More than a souvenir
Today, Maheshwari sarees have found their place on the global ramp and in the boutique collection. In Maheshwar, they are still deeply individual, symbol of pride, livelihood and living history. Passengers can visit centers such as Rehwa Society, which are placed inside the palace walls, to see artisans at work and even to buy from direct source.
Some visitors try their hands in the loom, while others take scarves, DupattasOr also men’s shirt. With every fold of a Maheshwari saree, you take a part of the living tradition of India, on the banks of the river, stitched in history, and wrapped in grace.
